Badan Pusat Statistik (BPS) mencatat, total impor kentang segar Tanah Air mencapai US$ 41,29 juta dengan volume sebanyak 92,78 juta kg pada 2021.
Jerman merupakan negara asal impor kentang terbesar Indonesia mencapai US$ 11,5 juta dengan volume 29,3 juta kg. Disusul impor kentang dari India sebanyak US$ 10,08 juta (27,94 juta kg).
Kemudian, Indonesia mengimpor kentang segar dari Australia sebesar US$ 5,4 juta (9,9 juta kg). Sementara, impor kentang dari Inggris dan Kanada masing-masing sebesar US$ 4,63 juta (5,75 juta kg) dan US$ 4,19 juta (8,19 juta kg).
Hingga saat ini Indonesia memang masih harus mengimpor kentang untuk kebutuhan industri makanan, dengan penggunaan khusus french fries dan keripik.
Produksi kentang Indonesia memang tinggi, tetapi hanya jenis kentang sayur. Oleh sebab itu, Badan Penelitian dan Pengembangan Pertanian (Balitbangtan) mempersiapkan 2 varietas unggulan kentang industri.
